Ground Source Heat Pumps

Tap into the earth's stable thermal energy. Ground source heat pumps deliver some of the highest efficiencies available in renewable heating technology.

What Is a Ground Source Heat Pump?

A ground source heat pump (GSHP) uses a network of pipes buried in your garden — either in horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes — to extract heat stored in the ground. Because ground temperatures remain relatively constant throughout the year, GSHPs can achieve even higher efficiencies than air source systems.

A well-designed GSHP system can deliver a Coefficient of Performance (CoP) of 3.5–5, meaning you get 3.5–5 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity used. Combined with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, the long-term economics are compelling.

N.R Ewart works with specialist ground-works contractors to manage the full installation — from ground survey and loop design through to heat pump commissioning and integration with your existing heating distribution system.

What We Offer

Ground Survey & Loop Design

We assess your land to determine the most suitable ground loop configuration — horizontal slinkies, vertical boreholes, or pond/lake loops — and calculate the correct loop length.

MCS-Certified Installation

Our MCS-certified installation qualifies you for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant and ensures the system meets all relevant standards.

Borehole Drilling Coordination

Where land area is limited, we coordinate with approved drilling contractors to install vertical boreholes, minimising disruption to your garden.

Underfloor Heating Systems

GSHPs are ideally paired with underfloor heating. We design and install wet underfloor systems that maximise the efficiency of your ground source installation.

Buffer Vessels & Cylinders

We supply and fit correctly sized buffer vessels and unvented hot water cylinders to ensure stable system operation and plentiful hot water.

Commissioning & Handover

Every system is fully commissioned, balanced, and handed over with a thorough walkthrough so you understand how to get the best from your investment.
